What happens when you put five Estonian musicians of the most diverse backgrounds (record collectors, DJs, street performers, and classical musicians) in a rehearsal room and press record? Estrada Orchestra answer this question on Playground with two live improvisations, each about twenty minutes long, recorded on November 21, 2020, at the Ganna & Sofia Playground Dance Workshop in Tallinn.
Situated somewhere between the laid-back Sun Ra Arkestra and very early Tangerine Dream, a meditative stream of tenor saxophone, flute, synthesizer, Wurlitzer, bass and percussion unfolds. One that knows no rush and has exactly the goal to lift the listener out of everyday life and let them drift along. Playground Part 1 builds carefully and fluidly, while Parts 2 & 3 condense and intensify the sonic space without ever becoming loud or pushy. Sound sculptures, shadowy melodies and tentative rhythms are the coordinates of this album.
Playground is the fifth album by Estrada Orchestra and their debut on Sulatron Records. Produced by Misha Panfilov, mastered by Jörgen Hermaste.
