Nostalgia

In the twentieth year of his solo career, Sula Bassana releases an album that sounds more like a return to roots than an experiment, and precisely because of this, it is one of his strongest. The five tracks on Nostalgia were created between 2013 and 2018, never fit stylistically with the more electronic albums in between, and patiently waited until the right moment. The cover art is by French painter Hervé Scott Flament.

"Real Life" opens with whispered vocals over sitar and wavering synthesizers, before the song builds to a stomping post-rock finale. "We Will Make It" feels like early Pink Floyd meets Sonic Youth, driving, hypnotic, with a wall of sound conclusion. The title track, "Nostalgia," is the centerpiece: melodic, slightly jazzy, with mellotron and pure fuzz. "Wurmloch" takes a synthesizer arpeggio and builds the rest of the instruments around it – a fully unfolded spaceflight. "Mellotraum," the oldest track, was created on the very first day of Sula Bassana's freshly arrived mellotron in 2013 and sounds like a first, astonished encounter.
