It started as a stopgap solution: In 1997, when Sula Bassana received a concert request for his band Liquid Visions that he could no longer fulfill, he spontaneously formed a new band for just that one gig: Zone Six. With Hans-Peter Ringholz on guitar and Claus Bühler on drums, the trio improvised for a single night in the rehearsal room of their friends' band The Butlers, all recorded live on an 8-track tape recorder.
In 1998, the material was officially released for the first time by Early Birds Records, subsequently supplemented with recorded vocals, Mellotron, and keyboards. This 2017 re-release for the band's 20th anniversary, however, brings back the original, purely instrumental version for the first time: two extensive, trance-like space rock improvisations, raw, unadulterated, and completely without later overdubs.
Those familiar with today's Zone Six from countless live albums and festival appearances will hear here the origin, the very first sign of life of a band that has since become one of Europe's most important Krautrock improvisation projects.
