The Ape Regards His Tail Original Soundtrack

In 2017, Sula Bassana scored his first complete feature film: The Ape Regards His Tail – Original Soundtrack was created for filmmaker Michael Yates' sci-fi drama of the same name and showcases a distinctly calmer, more introspective side of Sula Bassana's otherwise more driving sound.

Across eight largely minimalistic pieces, composed and performed on synthesizers, string ensembles, Mellotron, organ, electric guitar, and electric piano, a nearly hour-long journey unfolds through dark, melancholic soundscapes. The floating opener "Beginning" is reminiscent of Brian Eno's ambient works, while the short, organ-driven "Dreams" almost brings to mind Klaus Schulze's "Irrlicht." With "Desert" and "Sand Waves," pulsating sequences from the Berlin School creep in, showing clear influences from Tangerine Dream's "Phaedra," before the album fades out in calmer, almost desolate tones.

The Ape Regards His Tail is a fascinating detour into electronic film music, somewhere between Popol Vuh and the early Berlin electronic pioneers, and a self-contained listening experience even without the accompanying film.
