In 2017 for the first time Sula Bassana scored a full-length feature film. The Ape Regards His Tail – Original Soundtrack was created for the sci-fi drama of the same name by filmmaker Michael Yates and shows a significantly quieter, more introspective of Sula Bassana sound.
Across eight largely minimalist tracks, composed and recorded on synthesizers, string ensembles, mellotron, organ, electric guitar and electric piano, a nearly hour-long journey through dark, melancholic soundscapes emerges. The floating opener Beginning is reminiscent of Brian Eno's ambient works, while the short, organ-driven Dreams almost brings Klaus Schulze's Irrlicht to mind. With Desert and Sand Waves pulsating sequences of the Berlin School sneak in, showing clear influences from Tangerine Dream's Phaedra before the album fades out in quieter, almost sad tones.
The Ape Regards His Tail is a fascinating excursion into electronic film music somewhere between Popol Vuh and the early Berlin electronic pioneers and even without the accompanying film, it is an independent, self-contained listening experience.
