Science Fiction

Sci-fi films without pictures, but with sound: Science Fiction is a collection of previously unreleased instrumental soundtrack compositions from over two decades of Sun Dial history, remastered, overdubbed and remixed. The result is not a classic Sun Dial album, but a cinematic side project by Gary Ramon: twelve (or even thirteen on CD) short sound films that together create a journey of just under an hour through imaginary cosmic landscapes.
The opener Hangar 13 begins droning and hazy like a Gerry Anderson intro, before the funky Mind Machine changes direction with its space-disco groove. Saturn Return moves into synth-oriented territory, while Alien X remains dark and cinematographic and Rise Of The Robots shows Sun Dial's interpretation of Kraftwerk's machine side. Airlock briefly grounds the album with space rock energy, before Ghost Ship drifts into Darth Vader territory and the closing Starwatchers ends the set trippy and hypnotic.
Whether as an introduction to Sun Dial's sound world or as an addition to the discography: Science Fiction is an ideal album for anyone who appreciates Gary Ramon's ability to create moods that are far beyond the everyday.
