Laughter

With Laughter a/lpaca present their second album and impressively demonstrate why the Italian band has become one of the most exciting acts in the European psychedelic scene in recent years.

Already on their debut Make It Better, also released on Sulatron Records, the quartet from Mantua combined krautrock style motorik, psychedelic guitars and the energy of modern post-punk and noise bands into a unique soundscape. On Laughter this approach is consistently developed further. The songs feel more focused, the arrangements more complex and the dynamic between driving force and experimental openness is even more pronounced.

Where many current psych bands rely exclusively on hypnotic repetition, a/lpaca create a significantly broader arc of tension. Pulsating rhythms meet abrasive guitars, dense synthesizer textures meet catchy melodies. Time and again moments arise in which the tracks seem to dissolve, only to return shortly thereafter with renewed intensity.

Despite all its diversity, Laughter possesses a remarkably cohesive character. Krautrock, neo-psychedelia, post-punk and noise are not simply placed side by side but fused into an organic whole. In doing so, the band sounds modern and contemporary without denying their roots.

Laughter is an album full of movement, contrasts and energy. Sometimes hypnotic and atmospheric, sometimes direct and almost explosive. It reveals new facets with every listen. A bold step forward for a/lpaca and another strong statement from a band that has found its own path within the european psychedelic landscape.
