Tetrao Urogallus (Latin for capercaillie) are an instrumental sextet from Hamburg, founded by guitarist Dennis Rux and bassist David Nesselhauf, who have collaborated on several other projects and finally give free rein to their shared love for dark sounds, fuzz guitars and rousing brass sections in Tetrao Urogallus. The capercaillie is a grumpy, loud and striking and was chosen by the band as their totem, a symbol for forgotten forest creatures that celebrate their own rituals far away from civilization.
Their self-titled debut was created in 2022 over a single weekend at the Yeah! Yeah! Studios in Hamburg. Producer and keyboardist Erobique happened to be in the same studio and was immediately swept away by the surreal sound. His organ and synthesizer eruptions flowed seamlessly into the album. Their album Gulo Gulo was released on Sulatron Records in 2023, for which the band significantly expanded their sound arsenal. Mark Norton (saxophone), Jan Schepmann (trumpet) and Chris Haertel (Philicorda, Moog) completed the lineup. The concept is even more vivid this time. The capercaillie (Tetrao Urogallus) encounters the wolverine (Gulo Gulo) on a stormy night in the forest. Fog, rain, lightning, tension. That is what Gulo Gulo sounds like.
Music for dark forests, cinematic dream states and lovers of heavy psych with jazz horns and a pinch of doom.
