Saturnia was founded in Lisbon in 1996 by Luís Simões. Originally a free art collective spanning literature, photography, design, painting and music, it was named after a mixture of the Saturnia moth, the planet Saturn, and the Saturnalia. What began as a collaborative project quickly became a solo endeavor. Luís Simões writes, plays, produces, mixes and masters everything himself. This includes guitars, acoustic sitar, lap steel guitar, bass, Hammond organ, Philicorda, Farfisa, synthesizers, Mellotron, theremin, tanpura, gong and vocals.

Across a handful of albums released on labels including Cranium Music (New Zealand), Mellow Records and Elektrohasch, Simões evolved his sound away from electronic influences toward a trance-like, introspective space rock in the classic seventies tradition. His guests have included Daevid Allen (Gong), Nik Turner (Hawkwind) and Stefan Koglek (Colour Haze). Since 2022, Luís Simões has also been a permanent member of the Øresund Space Collective.

Released on Sulatron Records were Stranded In The Green (2021) (created in the wine hills of Portugal) and The Glitter Odd (2023) as the first LP release of his legendary 2001 debut. Both albums were hailed by the scene press as highlights of his extensive body of work.
