Cosmic Comics

Finland has one of Northern Europe's most vibrant psych scenes, and Permanent Clear Light are a good reason for it. Their 2014 debut Beyond These Things already garnered euphoric reviews. Since then, several singles and EPs have been released on Fruits de Mer Records. Cosmic Comics is the long-awaited second album, and it has fully justified the wait.
Markku Helin, Arto Kakko, and Matti Laitinen consider the recording studio their main instrument and have constructed Cosmic Comics with multi-layered arrangements that combine lovely, beautiful melodies with wicked, subversive lyrics. All in the sound of the psychedelic sixties, with Mellotron, fuzz guitars, and warm harmonies. The opener This Quiet Smiling Man, an ode to Robert Oppenheimer, begins with a drone guitar riff and ends in a Doors-esque freakout. Maurice N'est Pas La is incessant cosmic disco psych funk. Iris Murray and One In Five are earworms of the tender kind, the jazzy Salmiac leads into uncharted waters, and the closing The Rip sounds like a venerable demo recording.
Mastered by Eroc, a mark of quality that speaks for itself. Cosmic Comics is a small psychedelic milestone from the far north.
