Lamp of the Universe

2018 – 2019

Psychedelic Folk · Raga Rock · Space Rock

Lamp of the Universe is the solo project of Craig Williamson from Hamilton, New Zealand. About 80 kilometers south of Auckland, far enough away from everything to work in peace. Williamson writes, plays and produces everything himself in his home studio. Guitars, sitar, Moog, tanpura, tabla, Mellotron M4000 (once owned by Eddie Rayner of Split Enz), theremin and vocals. He began his musical career as the bassist and singer for Datura, one of New Zealand's first stoner rock bands. Lamp of the Universe was entirely something else from the beginning. More meditative, more Eastern, more introverted.

Since the debut The Cosmic Union (1999), Williamson has released over 14 albums under this name in which he has moved further and further in the direction of raga folk, psychand cosmic stillness. After years of friendly connection with Dave Schmidt and Sulatron Records, Align In The Fourth Dimension (2018) was released, his 14th album. It is his first release on Sulatron Records, as both LP and CD, and stands as one of the quietest yet most spiritual works in the label's entire catalog. Williamson is also the founder of the trio Arc of Ascent, which has also been released on the Sulatron-affiliated Headspin Records.

Music for silence, sitar meditations and for all those who prefer psych quiet rather than loud, eastern rather than western.
