Experimental Psych · Krautrock · Noise · Improvisation
Krautfuzz is a Berlin-based trio that began with its first improvised sessions at ZONE Studio in November 2022 after Imari Kokubo (drums), Dirk Dresselhaus (guitar, voice) and Derek Shirley (bass) had missed each other for years and finally ended up playing together. No pre-rehearsed material, no setlists, just the communication between the three musicians in the moment and the belief that instinctive mutual listening can yield more than any composition.
The backgrounds of the three musicians could hardly be more different: as Schneider TM, Dirk Dresselhaus has been a key figure in the Berlin electronic and post-punk scene since the nineties, known for collaborations with Faust, Holger Czukay, Damo Suzuki and Einstürzende Neubauten and also as a member of the noise-drone project die ANGEL. Derek Shirley (Canada) played with, among others, Piratezombiedog, The Still and Hi-Speed Dubbing. Imari Kokubo (Japan) is known from the environment of the Vladislav Delay Quartet and numerous Japanese experimental projects. Together, they create a sound that unites futuristic tension, fuzz-drenched neo-psych rock, abstract highly processed minimalism and spontaneous bursts of energy.
They had plenty of guest musicians so far including J Mascis (Dinosaur Jr.), Elena Poulou (ex-The Fall), Kurt Dahlke (Pyrolator, Der Plan) and Chandra Shukla (Psychic TV). The Sulatron release Live At The Church (2025) documents a concert from June 15, 2024, at the Genezareth Evangelical Church in Berlin featuring J Mascis during the second half of the evening.
Music for those who like it when rock no longer recognizes itself out of sheer freedom.
