In 2012, Davi Rodriguez de Lima left Brazil to live in Germany, leaving behind friends, family and a career as a drummer with the well-known indie band Ecos Falsos and the experimental punk band Orange Disaster. What followed were years of adjustment, loneliness, isolation and one of the most unusual solo albums Sulatron Records has ever released.
Fantasma (2020) was created between 2017 and 2019 as part of Davi's master's thesis in Sound Design at the university in Frankfurt. The drums are not real drums, but a self-produced, sample-based drum kit made from foley recordings. Construction sites, milk cans and when nothing else worked, a strike against a window. The bass is a Moog synthesizer. Davi built the tube amplifier for the guitars himself. Everything else like vocals, guitars, composition, mixing, mastering, cover design was also done by him alone.
The title Fantasma (Ghost) says it all. Ghosts are lonely beings, trapped between worlds, expatriated from life which is exactly what Davi experienced as a Brazilian immigrant in Germany. The result is an album between blues punk, psychedelic no wave, experimental electronica and an almost shamanic freakout core that remains catchy despite its uncompromising nature.
